Even functions use only cosines (<em>F(–x) = F(x)</em>) and odd functions use only sines. The coefficients <em>a<sub>n</sub></em> and <em>b<sub>n</sub></em> come from integrals of <em>F(x)</em> cos(<em>nx</em>) and <em>F(x)</em> sin(<em>nx</em>).
